Mock Interviews

Every year, the Academy holds a Mock Interview Day where we pair each of our eleventh grade students with a business partner who will give them a mock, one-one-one,  fifteen-minute job interview. This is an invaluable chance for our students to practice resume and interviewing skills. Many of our students have told us they have interviewed for real summer jobs using the skills they practiced at this event, and were then hired!

Download our MockInterviewFlyer2016.doc for a printable sheet of info about this event, and be sure to read the details below.

Date and Times:

For 2016 the Academy will be holding Mock Interviews on Thursday April 28 and Friday April 29 in the Clairemont High Library. There will be one 90-minute interview session on each day:

    • Session A:  Thur. Apr 28 from 12:45 – 2:15 PM
    • Session B: Fri. April 29 from 12:45 – 2:15 PM
Students Being Interviewed:

The students who are participating in these mock interviews are Academy of Business (AOB) 11th graders. They must complete this interview activity as a graded class assignment, and they are competing against each other for the “job.” Most of them have never conducted a job interview before.

Students will be nervous because this will be a new learning experience for them! An AOB teacher prepares them ahead of time with sample interview questions and information about dress and etiquette, but the real learning starts once they are seated in front of a business partner. The feedback given to each student regarding their interview will translate into a letter grade in their business class.

Job Position Postings:

In order to schedule the students for their mock interview, we are asking each volunteer interviewer to create a fictitious entry-level job posting with their company.  The students view the job postings to decide which “job” to interview for. Please visit our online AOB Mock Interview Registration Form to fill out the information prior to the interviews. When filling out the form above, interviewers will need to provide the following info:

      • Interviewer name and contact info
      • Company name and industry field
      • Sessions available (there are four, see above)
      • Job Opening Position Title (a fictitious entry-level job that interviewees can “apply” for)
      • Job Posting Description ( a short 3-5 sentence description of the fictitious position above)
      • Skill Requirements (a short bulleted list of 5-6 key skills needed for the “job opening” above)
Location & Check-In:

The Mock Interviews are held in the Clairemont High School Library. Clairemont High is located at 4150 Ute Drive, San Diego, CA 92117.

Upon arrival, interviewers will need to park in one of the “Guest” parking spots outside the campus, and then check in at the main office (located near the flagpole and marquee). The front office will direct interviewers to the library at the back of the campus (see campus map). In the library, Academy staff will greet interviewers and provide them with all materials (see below). Interviewers will find a table sign with the interviewer’s name and company.  Students are scheduled to rotate up to the library at their assigned interview time. Interviewers will remain stationary in the library as students show up for their “appointment.”

Mock Interview Format & Materials:

Interviewers generally interview four to five students students over the course of a 90 minute session.  This means each interview will typically last 15 minutes. Interviewers are welcome to do more than one session. The students who have “applied” for each interviewer’s position know they are competing against each other to “win the job.” Interviewers will have an opportunity to see each student’s resume during the 15-minute interview.

On the day of the interviews, volunteer interviewers are provided with a folder containing: Mock Interview Directions, a copy of their Job Position Posting Form, the schedule of students  interviewing, a list of Sample Interview Questions, Mock Interview Metric & Feedback Form, and a You’re Hired Form . At the end of the session, interviewers can return the folder with completed metrics to the school librarian.

While conducting the interviews, volunteers are asked to choose questions from our  list of Sample Interview Questions and conduct each interview as if it were real. Interviewers are encouraged to take notes on each interviewee.

After each interview, we ask that volunteer interviewers  fill out a Mock Interview Metric & Feedback Form for each student. This will not only give each student feedback on his or her resume and interview, but it will also be factored into each student’s  grade on this assignment. If there is time after the formal interview is complete, interviewers are also welcome to give each student a little verbal feedback after their “formal”  interview session is over.

After the entire session is over, interviewers are asked to choose which of the “applicants” gave the best interview and “hire” him or her by filling out a special You’re Hired Form. The “hired” student will receive recognition and extra credit.
